Japanese scientists have discovered microscopic, single-cell organisms living in the Pacific Ocean’s deepest trench, the Challenger Deep. An article published in Science magazine says soft-shelled forms of the plankton Foraminifera were found at a depth of almost 11,000 metres, where the atmospheric pressure is immense.Hard-shelled Foraminifera are commonly found at the ocean surface, but the scientists say almost nothing had been known about small, sediment-dwelling organisms living in such remote environments as the Challenger Deep. The scientists, from Shizuaka University, used a remote control vehicle to explore the trench, near the Mariana Islands and the American territory of Guam.
