Bodies in Space…
Ann Liv Young’s Michael, which opened at Dance Theater Workshop on Wednesday night, comes with a warning that it is for «mature» audiences. That usually means a little nudity. Ms. Young’s work, however, offers male masturbation, pornographic-movie tableaus, a scene of cocaine consumption and naked women dancing wildly to loud rock music. But the piece is not really about sex (or drugs, or rock ‘n’ roll), nor is it particularly erotic. Indeed, most of the shock value of the nudity lies not in any sexual innuendo but in the oddness of seeing real bodies, with hair, bruises and floppy breasts, in their uninhibited, unairbrushed imperfection.
