Hey Kris, Made With FontFont is not a book done produced by me or nodesign, it is by Erik Spiekerman and Jan Middendorp and you can get it via Fontshop, as Stephen pointed out. It’s a great book which I recommend warmly. The Fontbook, while compleely different in scope and aim, is a great asset as well and shouldn’t be amiss on any self-respecting type-lovers desk ;-). Plus, give my regards to Fontshop San Francisco, whom I kindly remember from helping out when the very first Open Type Fonts from Adobe weren’t available in Germany and they got ‘em for me. Stephen rocks.

I applaud your efforts at sharing what is happening in Europe with the Americans. As a typographer with forty years’ experience I can tell you every definitely that I (we) are interested in what your company is doing.

P.S. Among other things I have downloaded about 14,000 titles of public domain books from the Gutenberg collection and proofread over 1300 pages from Project Gutengerg and its European counterpart, especially titles in Italian and German, plus book titles from Gutenberg Australia. I have designed 12 books from a New Age author in Arkansas including a three-volume set of interpretation of Nostradamus as interpreted through regressive hypnosis and created a three-volume, cumulative index for the set. My Gutenberg titles I hope to make available in a Mac-friendly environment to schools and libraries across the country at cost plus a 20% royalty to Gutenburg per an agreement with Dr.. Michael Hart, founder and president of the project, who by the way, just passed their 20,000 book count this month!

Celly - FF Fago is of course but one of nearly 4,000 FontFonts, but I was generally not a fan either. Until I saw it used near the Berlin Wall memorial. I think you'll find it works quite well there.

Mir gefallen die Sachen von PrimeType auch sehr gut.
Obwohl man da natürlich nicht so die Bandbreite hat.
Aber sehr schöne dynamische Grotesk-Schriften dabei – die sich untereinander aber auch sehr ähneln – haben halt diesen Ole-Schäfer-Style.

Ourtype mag ich, hab aber den Job dazu noch nicht gefunden. Wobei die Ourtype-Fonts so derart in einer Linie mit FSI stehen… ist ja auch kein Wunder :-D. Bei MRF finde ich es teils zu verspielt, teils mag ich nicht, dass es an OSFs und so etwas mangelt. Es ist ja auch kein «Ich mag X lieber als Y». Alle Foundries sind gut, denn mehr Auswahl ist mehr Auswahl. Aber ich denke, FSi und Emigre gehört in dem digitalen Zeitalter eine besondere Position, so wie anderen Firmen vielleicht in der Zeit des Photosatzes oder wieder anderen in der Zeit des Bleisatzes. Beide waren kommerziell erfolgreiche Pioniere. Man kann sich über die U2 von heute sicher trefflich streiten, aber die historische Position der Band ist eben einzigartig…

Danke, HD. Also muss ich meine Meinung doch nicht verstecken. Ich finde die Fonts von http://www.ourtype.be oder Stefan Hattenbach (www.macrhino.com) wesentlich spektakulärer – Klasse statt Masse. Allerdings konnte ich diese Fonts leider noch nicht ausprobieren.

Die Fago ist auch nicht gerade mein Speziallfall, muß ich zugeben, hab sie mir nie zugelegt, obwohl sie als OpenType vielleicht etwas handlicher sein dürfte.
Aber wenn man etwa dynamische moderne Sans-Schriften sucht, kommt man um FSi nicht herum. Ganz abgesehen davon, dass die Foundry einfach wie keine Zweite ein Zeitsymptom darstellt, selbst die Tatsache, daß sie inzwischen etwas konservativ geworden ist und kleinere Foundries den jungen Markt eher bedienen, paßt in dieses Bild.

Mist … ich bin vermutlich der einzige Mensch, der mit den FF’s nicht klar kommt (sagt auch unser Schriften-Dozent). Dabei gelten die Fonts als soooo hip. Alle Welt schwärmt von Ole Schäfers Fago und ich finde sie einfach nur fürchterlich: Miserabel zugerichtet, auf 80 T1-Fonts verteilt – ein einziger Albtraum, auf einem halben Meter Schrift-Menü aufgereiht. Wenn ich die Univers als Messlatte ansetze, sehen diese Schriften unter dem Strich nur noch blass aus. Und gar nicht mehr so «hip».

Wie gesagt – ich bin vermutlich der Einzige. Sorry, aber auf die FF-Ode kann ich nicht einsteigen. Was mache ich falsch?

außer vielleicht: gerade deshalb ist es eben ein must-have.
